Distracted Driving - A Killer Epidemic

Driving a car is a dangerous task that requires our full time and attention. Unfortunately, we live in a world where people are constantly distracted. Distraction occurs any time you take your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel, and your mind off your primary task: driving safely.  From cell phones, billboards, eating and drinking while driving, the radio, and even our children, distraction on the road is everywhere. Drivers simply do not devote enough attention to the road.  In 2014, more than 431,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. The same year 3,179 people were killed by distracted drivers. The epidemic of distracted driving is alarming.

What can you do?

The simple answer is: Pay attention. If every driver paid full time and attention to the road, we could put an end to motor vehicle accidents caused by distracted driving. If every driver put their cell phone down and waited to send that text, to look at that website, or to make that call, no one else would be injured or killed by distracted drivers. That is the simple answer.

Unfortunately, even if you are paying attention to other cars on the road, the other drivers may not be looking at you.  When those drivers choose to send that text instead of pay attention to you and your family, they put you at risk of injury or death. They make you a statistic.

But you can still help end distracted driving.

You can end distracted driving by holding those who hurt others responsible.

When wrongdoers are held accountable for the damage they cause, they are discouraged from doing wrong in the future. If enough drivers know they will be held accountable for negligent driving, they will choose to drive more safely. In Oklahoma, negligent drivers are held accountable in the court room. They are held accountable with verdicts and settlements which send a message to everyone that unsafe driving will not be tolerated in our State.

At Accident and Disability Lawyers of OKC, we can help hold those who have hurt you or your family accountable for their negligent actions. Call us at 405-759-0515 to discuss your case.
